In 2009, Socotra hosted 3986 tourists: the majority of them coming from Italy (919 persons), 382 Czechs, 325 Frenchmen, 320 Germans. 57 persons came to the island to conduct authorized research. The figures were announced by Mr. Abdullah Musa, the Head of the Tourist Police, Socotra.
The numbers of Socotra’s visitors have been growing from 70 persons who came in 1999 when the Hadibo airport was opened.
An “endemic” species is one that is restricted in distribution. In other words, it can be found in only one place in the world and does not occur anywhere else. Socotra has many endemics.
